Finding Ways To Get Out Of Debt: A Second Job?
Filed Under Debt Counseling | Leave a Comment
It should go without saying, but when more money is going out than coming in each and every month, that is known as a negative cash flow. Or, more simply put: finding some month left at the end of the paycheck! This being the case, there are some options from which to choose in order to turn this situation around. In this article, we will consider the option of a second job.
Of the many choices to consider to turn around your financial ship before it hits the rocky shore, a second job is a viable option. However, if you are already working a full time job, that choice will become a little tricky to accomplish. If your current job provides regular hours and days, a second job that can be scheduled around your current work routine could give you the extra cash needed to get out of debt.
Obviously, the first thing to seek is if your current employer has overtime available. Just an extra ten hours a week of overtime equals an extra 15 hours of pay. This is about what your second part time job would offer and you would be able to work the extra hours at the same place of employment. You will also find that this approach will help you avoid extra travel time to the other job and not have to take that time spent driving to and from your second job into consideration as well.
If that isn’t an option, looking for a second job elsewhere is the next step. To begin with, let’s take a look at your skills. When looking for a second job, it is good to start by listing your qualifications and other skills that would make you a candidate for a second job. It could also be something related to what you are doing now. For example, if you are a teacher, you could find part time work as a tutor for students that need extra counseling in an area they are failing in at school.
Regardless of which options you are able to exercise, getting that second job will cut into some of your off time. It may require you to work your weekends or go from your full time job right to a part time job without first being able to go home. It will also mean that you won’t be getting as much sleep because of the potential work hours required at your second job in addition to the hours you already work at your current job. This is something to keep in mind when safety is a concern. It will do you no good to be holding two jobs if you are not awake and at your best, both on the job and at home. It could also result in you falling asleep at the wheel!
Working those extra hours is going to take away some family time as well. It will require your family understanding why you are doing this so you get the support from home that will be needed while you put your nose to the grindstone in order to get out from under your current debt load.
All of this being a possibility, there is also another option to weigh out that might not require leaving home. It is called ‘telecommuting’ and it involves finding work that can be done through the Internet on your computer. The Internet offers a chance to find paid work right from the comfort of your living room.
Some things to consider could include starting a business selling items on eBay. If you have writing skills, you could hire yourself out as a freelance writer. There are more companies that are offering outsourcing through the Internet today as well. Jobs such as being a customer service representative, documenting medical transcriptions, performing data entry and other jobs that don’t require you to set foot in an office. As long as you have access to an Internet connection (which of course you do if you found the job online in the first place), up-to-date computer software, a scanner and a fax, the company can keep in touch with you.
In summation, consider this: Regardless of your situation, by being willing to find extra work in order to pay down your debts, it won’t mean doing this for the rest of your life. A second job is usually temporary until you get enough money to pay off your debt and still be able to live. Even though simply thinking of what you will have to endure isn’t a pleasant thought, the reason you are doing this is a good one.
And, also learn from this experience to not put yourself in this position ever again!
