Debt Consolidation Information Guidelines

There is no doubt that debt is very real for many people today and weighing heavily on the minds of many.  Whenever looking for answers to our debt problems, one area that is likely to help is debt consolidation organizations.  As a result, there is the need to not only find the best company out there, but that they not end up just being another debt consolidation scam artist.  Unfortunately, there are both types available.

So, how do you avoid any debt management agency that is simply out to get your money and not give you the help you need?  A starting point is to gather all debt consolidation information you can in order to make an informed decision as to which company to go with, in order to receive the best and most reputable debt consolidation counseling you need.

You can turn to the Internet and put phrases such as “debt consolidation companies” or “debt consolidation organizations” into the browser box and begin your online search of finding a trusted company that is out to help you and not scam you.

You can also look through the business directory in your area to find the many debt consolidation organizations that are there to help you.  Call them up, ask questions relating to your particular financial situation, make an appointment and don’t be shy making sure they will have your best interests at heart.

You might even consider asking a family member or friend to recommend a company they had a positive experience with.  Get the name and number of their agent and give them a call to set up an appointment.

Once you have settled on what you believe to be the best debt consolidation company to represent you, start right away negotiating their fees and what time frame to expect to achieve your debt relief goals.  Within this process, here are some suggested questions for you to ask:

1.    Tell me about your company and what you can do to help?

If you are not getting the straight answers to these questions, it is the first red flag to warn you they do not have your best interest at heart.  For example, if they stonewall you by either appearing evasive in their answer or request information from your credit report first before answering your questions, it is likely you need to simply get up and get out!

2.    How much are your services?

As it is going to be with even the best debt consolidation companies, there will be a cost factor to consider.  However, the initial consultation fee should be free of charge.  Also, be on guard to any hidden processing fees that could be tacked onto your bill.  Keep in mind why you are there in the first place: to get debt consolidation counseling in order to get out from under your debt.  It will do no good to incur additional debt while desiring to get out of debt!

3.    What are your options for handling debt?

Any debt consolidation company that offers debt management programs, over proper credit counseling or viable payment plans, is likely up to something.  It may be that they are getting kickbacks to sell that particular program and that is where they make most of their money.  If this is the case, again it would be wise to think twice before going with any debt consolidation companies that operate in this manner.

Bottom line:
don’t find yourself falling for any possible hype pitched by any debt consolidation scams.  If you do nothing else recommended in this article, at least consult the Better Business Bureau to find out whether a particular company you are considering going with, that is offering up their brand of debt consolidation info, is on the up and up.  Be sure to gather as much debt consolidation information as you can before moving forward in getting the debt counseling you need to one day become debt free.
