Getting Rid Of Credit Card Debt
Filed Under Credit Cards | Leave a Comment
There is no disputing this fact; far too many Americans spend beyond their means. Statistics reveal that the average American citizen owes at least $8,000 in credit card debt. This is in addition to a mortgage, a car payment (or two), not to mention all of those ‘fun’ monthly bills that never seem to end. Clearly the goal should be getting out of credit card debt instead of going ever deeper into debt. In order to really make this happen, you must make a few changes in your life; you need to understand that getting rid of credit card debt is a good thing; but, how to eliminate credit card debt? You first need to admit you have a problem and then seek help with credit card debt as quickly as possible.
To start with, count the number of credit cards you have. This can vary from person to person, as well as the amount of debt on each card. Now, add up the total amount of the debt on these credit cards. Having done this, take a closer look at the APR or Annual Percentage Rate on each of the cards. Depending on the percentage, this is likely where you lose ground each month on getting rid of credit card debt. Any credit card that has a high APR is causing you to hemorrhage money in interest payments alone. Actually, this is exactly what the credit card companies count on; it is how they make their money, especially if you owe thousands of dollars on a credit card that has a high APR of 18 percent or more. If you are only making the minimum monthly payment on this high APR credit card, you will virtually never get it paid off!
Obviously, one of the keys to getting rid of credit card debt is to stop spending. This is not referring to necessary debt like the mortgage or car payment. What it is referring to is your obsessive spending on unnecessary items. I’m talking about that new flat panel television that has caught your eye to replace your 32-inch TV that works just fine or a new wardrobe of clothing when the clothes you have are not worn out and still fit. The number one problem with people and credit card debt is that everyone tends to spend on things they cannot afford. All you need to do is say ‘charge it’ and you can have it now (and pay for it later!).
If you truly want to begin getting rid of credit card debt, you need to carefully watch where you spend your money in order to get rid of credit card debt once and for all. Begin documenting where every penny is spent every day. Seek professional help with credit card debt if necessary. Write down all of your bills and the money you have to spend each month, such as gas, food and pet supplies.
Now, once you have this in front of you, it will give you a pretty good idea of what you should be paying out each month for bills. The next question you need to ask yourself is: does my paycheck cover these expenses? If you answer that you need more money than you actually earn each month, then keeping close track of your spending will really help you with managing your income. Again, do you really need cable TV or that subscription to a magazine you never read anyway?
If you truly want to get rid of credit card debt, you must first admit that you need help with credit card debt and then begin to apply the tips above on how to eliminate credit card debt all together. Once you have learned how to get out of credit card debt, getting rid of credit card debt will become the new addictive presence in your life that will result in financial freedom for the rest of your life
